VYRE 001 — IYA. Wear the record.

IYA

Three years ago, I tried to build a clothing brand. It fell apart — not from a bad idea, but from not knowing what I was doing, and not knowing how to get it in front of anyone. That failure sat with me for three years.

VYRE is the second attempt. Everything I didn't have the first time — the technical process, the supplier vetting, the patience to build it right instead of fast — is in here.

The name behind this collection is IYA — the real name given to the Benin Earthworks, one of the largest man-made structures on Earth. Walls and ditches stretching roughly 10,000 miles, built by the Edo people. Most of it still sits unexcavated, swallowed by forest, unknown even to most of Nigeria.

The people who built it didn't just build walls for defense. They built in radiating, fractal patterns — the same geometric logic real Yoruba cities used, roads spoking outward from a central point to the edges of the kingdom. Into the structure itself, they encoded knowledge — grids of the kind real Hausa and Borno scholars called Ilm al-Awfaq, mathematics some considered too close to the occult to teach openly.

They were keepers of Olokun's knowledge — the Edo god of the ocean's depths, ruler of what lies beyond where light reaches. And every piece of metal in this collection belongs to Ogun, the god of iron, the one who opens the way. That's why nothing here shines. Nothing is chrome. Everything is oxidized, matte, real.

The civilization that built Iya vanished. The record remained, waiting for whoever came looking.

Every piece in this collection is framed as a fragment of that record — recovered, not designed. The garment is the artifact. This whole brand is proof, to a younger version of myself, that the lesson actually landed.
